Unsure about your next steps? Talk it through with us this summer
If you're rethinking your plans, worried about your results, or simply unsure what to do next, you’re not alone.
Book a conversation with one of our specialist advisors for friendly, impartial support ahead of Clearing.
We can help you:
- Understand your options if things don’t go to plan
- Explore alternative courses or pathways
- Get advice on your personal statement
- Feel more confident about your next steps
- Connect you with the right academic teams for course-specific questions
Please note: These conversations are for advice and guidance, so we won’t be able to make or confirm offers. We can, however, help you understand your options and what to do next.
Our students and staff have put together a collection of top tips to help you through Clearing:
1. Prepare in advance
Even if you’re feeling confident, it can be helpful to have a back-up plan. Getting familiar with how Clearing works before Results Day can make things feel more straightforward. Having a shortlist of alternative courses and universities can also make it easier to check options when listings are published.
2. Check official Clearing listings
You’ll find the most up-to-date course vacancies on the UCAS website and individual university websites. Some media websites also publish listings, but it’s best to check directly with UCAS or the university for the latest information.
3. Consider alternative courses
Clearing can offer more choice than you might expect, especially if you’re open to exploring similar subjects or joint courses. These can still support your interests and career goals, while giving you more options to consider.
4. Start ringing possible universities straight away
Results day is a busy time, and some courses can fill up quickly. Our team will be on hand, with well-staffed phone lines to help keep waiting times down.
5. Always make the phone call yourself
Universities are unable to offer places unless they are actually speaking to the student.
6. Be prepared
Have your important documents readily available, including your UCAS personal ID number, exam results, and any other relevant paperwork. This will make the clearing process smoother and less stressful.
7. Prepare for interviews
Some universities/courses may require an interview as part of the clearing process. Be prepared by researching the course, reviewing your personal statement, and practicing common interview questions. We have some additional information about interviews that will help you prepare depending on your chosen subject.
Plenty of students go through Clearing each year and find the right place for them - and we’re here to help if you need us. Good Luck!

I've accepted a conditional offer from another university but want to switch. How do I do that?
If you have been accepted by your firm choice, it's not too late to change your mind. You can release yourself from your firm place on  or contact your firm university who can do this on your behalf. However, it is important that there is a place for you on your preferred course, so do chat with the university you’re interested in first.
I've accepted an unconditional offer from another university but want to switch. How do I do that?
If you are holding an unconditional offer, it's not too late to change your mind. You can release yourself from your firm place on  or contact your firm university who can do this on your behalf. However, it is important that there is a place for you on your preferred course, so shop around first.
I didn’t get my predicted grades – what should I do?
First of all, log-on to  and check if you have been accepted by either your first or your second choice university. If you are not holding any offers, you’ll automatically be in Clearing.
To get offers from other universities, you’ll need to check the vacancy listings on UCAS and decide which course(s) and universities you’re interested in. Once you have made a shortlist, you’ll then need to call the universities you’re interested in. You may also wish to contact your school/college for further support and advice.
I’ve been given an offer on the phone but I haven’t received any confirmation. How long does this take?
You should receive an email immediately confirming you have been made a provisional offer and what you need to do next. If not please contact the Student Recruitment Team by emailing  study@hud.ac.uk &²Ô²ú²õ±è;
Once I have my grades, what’s next?
Log-on to  and check if you have been accepted by either your first or your second choice university. Some universities may also send you a text message and/or email confirming your place. A decision on your place might be outstanding if you’re still awaiting GCSE results, or other results that are included in the conditions of your offer, or the university has yet to update .
How do I confirm/accept my offer?
You log on to  and Click 'Add Clearing choice' and fill in the course details by the date/time the university/college gave you on the phone. This counts as you definitely accepting the offer, so if they confirm it'll show as an acceptance on .
You can only add one choice at a time, but if the university doesn't confirm your place, you'll be able to add another.
Please only add a Clearing choice once you have been offered a place by the university.
Do I need to evidence that I have obtained my A Level grades?
The University receives many recently achieved qualification results such as A levels via UCAS automatically so there is usually no need to provide evidence until enrolment when you may be asked to provide evidence. We will contact you if we do need you to send your certificates for any qualifications which have not been verified.
How long is a Clearing offer open for?
Clearing places are awarded on a first come, first served basis. Your Clearing offer will only remain open while we have places available so we recommend that you accept your offer of a place by using the 'Add Clearing choice' option on  as soon as possible.
I've changed my mind about the course I want to study. What do I do?
If you change your mind about what course you want to study, we will need to check if the course you’re interested in has a place available and if you have the correct grades and subjects for that course. Please email the Student Recruitment Team at study@hud.ac.uk
My details are incorrect – who do I contact?
Please email study@hud.ac.uk so we can arrange for your details to be updated.
Do I need to have an interview?
Find out more about which courses interview in Clearing, and what you’ll need to do, on our interview page.
How long does it take for UCAS to update with offers?
will update once the university makes a decision:
- If you are holding a place pending exam results, once these have been received and you have met the conditions of your offer, your place will be confirmed.
- If you have referred yourself in Clearing, already have your exam results and have been verbally offered a place this will appear in  as an unconditional offer once the university has checked and processed your referral.
- Please be aware that there may be a delay due to the high volume of applications.
