Clearing top tips
Our students and staff have put together a collection of top tips to help you through Clearing:
1. Prepare in advance
Even if you’re feeling confident, it can be helpful to have a back-up plan. Getting familiar with how Clearing works before Results Day can make things feel more straightforward. Having a shortlist of alternative courses and universities can also make it easier to check options when listings are published.
2. Check official Clearing listings
You’ll find the most up-to-date course vacancies on the UCAS website and individual university websites. Some media websites also publish listings, but it’s best to check directly with UCAS or the university for the latest information.
3. Consider alternative courses
Clearing can offer more choice than you might expect, especially if you’re open to exploring similar subjects or joint courses. These can still support your interests and career goals, while giving you more options to consider.
4. Start ringing possible universities straight away
Results day is a busy time, and some courses can fill up quickly. Our team will be on hand, with well-staffed phone lines to help keep waiting times down.
5. Always make the phone call yourself
Universities are unable to offer places unless they are actually speaking to the student.
6. Be prepared
Have your important documents readily available, including your UCAS personal ID number, exam results, and any other relevant paperwork. This will make the clearing process smoother and less stressful.
7. Prepare for interviews
Some universities/courses may require an interview as part of the clearing process. Be prepared by researching the course, reviewing your personal statement, and practicing common interview questions. We have some additional information about interviews that will help you prepare depending on your chosen subject.
