What is a postgraduate research degree?

A postgraduate research (PGR) degree is an advanced qualification centred on independent research rather than taught study. Instead of attending regular lectures and completing exams, you'll investigate a specific research question in depth, supported by academic supervisors who will guide you throughout your research journey. By undertaking original research, you'll develop specialist knowledge in your chosen field while building advanced analytical, critical thinking and research skills that are highly valued by employers and academia.

Common types of postgraduate research degrees include:

• PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) – a PhD is the highest academic qualification awarded by UK universities. It involves carrying out original, independent research that makes a significant contribution to knowledge within your chosen subject area.  A full-time PhD typically takes three to four years to complete. During this time, you'll work closely with your supervisory team, produce a substantial thesis presenting your research findings, and complete a viva (oral examination) in which you discuss and defend your research.
• Master by Research (MSc/MA by Research) - a Master's by Research is primarily based on an independent research project, with far less taught content than a traditional taught master's degree.  Typically completed over one year full-time, you'll investigate a specific research topic under the guidance of academic supervisors before submitting a dissertation or thesis based on your findings.
• Doctor of Education (EdD) - the Doctor of Education (EdD) is a professional doctorate designed for experienced education professionals who want to undertake advanced research while continuing to develop their professional practice.  Equivalent in academic level to a PhD, the EdD combines structured research training in the early stages of the programme with independent research that culminates in an original thesis.
